Common Questions About Low-Cost Counselling in Vancouver

We’ve compiled answers to the most common questions to ensure you feel confident and informed about seeking low-cost support.

How is low-cost counselling different from regular therapy?

Our low-cost counselling is provided by supervised practicum students and recent graduate interns, rather than fully licensed therapists. However, all sessions are overseen by PhD-level supervisors who ensure the same quality standards. The main differences are the reduced rates and the educational component for the counsellors, but the therapeutic outcomes and professional standards remain the same.

Yes, absolutely. Our practicum students are graduate-level students in counselling programs, and our interns are recent graduates with 200+ hours of supervised client work. Most importantly, all sessions are supervised by PhD-level therapists who provide direct, one-on-one guidance. This supervision model actually ensures a higher standard of care in many cases.

Our low-cost counselling programs are open to anyone seeking mental health support. There are no income requirements or eligibility criteria. We believe that quality mental health care should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their financial situation.

We have a compassionate promise: if you are struggling to make the $50 rate and still need support, please reach out to discuss your situation and we will work with you to find a solution. We are committed to ensuring that cost is never a barrier to healing.

Yes, we offer couples and family counselling through both our practicum program ($70 for 50 minutes, $105 for 80 minutes) and intern program ($120 for 50 minutes, $180 for 80 minutes). Our couples counsellors receive specialized training in relationship therapy approaches.

Practicum students are current graduate students completing their training requirements, while interns are recent graduates who have completed their degree and accumulated 200+ hours of supervised client work over 6-12 months. Interns can accept extended health coverage and are working toward their professional designation (RCC/CCC).

Wait times vary depending on the program and time of year, but we typically can match you with a counsellor within 2-4 weeks. We prioritize urgent cases and will work to accommodate your scheduling needs as much as possible.
