Sophie Ma Zhu, MA, RCC, is a registered clinical counsellor with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (#15018). She holds a Master’s Degree of Counselling Psychology from both UBC and Beijing Normal University in China. She received training in Adlerian Psychotherapy and Parent Education based on Adlerian Psychology. She also gained knowledge and experience in mindfulness and meditation.
Back in China, Sophie was mostly working with university students on their career development issues. After pursuing further education in Canada, she has been working in community-based settings with adult clients on a range of issues including depression, anxiety, self-esteem, life transitions, intimate relationships, family conflicts, and existential crisis. Her volunteer work has been devoted to increasing accessible services and support in the LGBTTQQIAAP community.
As a counsellor with a person-centred approach, Sophie believes in the strengths of each client and their ability to self-reflect. She considers authenticity and holding a safe space as the foundation of any therapeutic work. She highly values her role as a counsellor in supporting individuals along their journey to move towards where they want to be in life.
In addition to her work as a counsellor, Sophie has past or current experience involved in research projects on the transition to adulthood, youth with developmental and intellectual disabilities, and addictions issues.
