Career exploration is an essential process for young people as they begin to navigate their future educational and career paths. It involves identifying their interests, skills, values, and strengths to make informed decisions about their future.
Many young people feel unsure about what comes after school. It may be time to reach out when that worry starts to affect sleep, schoolwork, family talks or plans for next year.
Not knowing what you want to do after school
Feeling stuck when asked about your future
Worry about picking the wrong program
Pressure from family about your career path
Comparing yourself to friends who seem sure
Putting off applications or course choices
Unsure what you are good at or enjoy
Losing interest in school because it feels pointless
How counselling helps
What working on it together looks likeHow counselling helps
Early on
Understand where you are
You and your counsellor talk about your interests, values and strengths, and what makes thinking about the future feel hard right now.
As you go
Ease the pressure
Together you notice worried thoughts like "I have to get this right" and practise calmer ways to think, using tools from cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).
Over time
Take small next steps
Using solution-focused and strength-based therapy, you set small, real steps, like talking to someone in a job you are curious about or trying a new course.

It may help if thinking about the future brings up a lot of worry, arguments or avoidance. Some young people freeze when asked about their plans, while others change their mind every week and feel lost. You do not need a crisis or a clear goal to start, only a wish to talk it through with someone outside the family.
No, many young people start with no idea at all. Not knowing is a common place to begin. Your counsellor helps you look at what you enjoy, what matters to you and what you are good at, so options can start to take shape at your own pace.
Yes, family can often join when it helps and when the young person is comfortable. Some sessions may include a parent to talk about hopes and pressure at home, while others are just for the young person. Your counsellor will talk with you about what feels right, and you can share as much or as little as you like.
The first session is mostly a conversation to get to know you. Your counsellor may ask about school, your interests, what a good day looks like and what feels hard about choosing a path. You decide what to share, and together you agree on what you want to work on.
Yes, you can meet online from anywhere in BC, or in person in Abbotsford or Coquitlam. Many young people like video sessions because they fit around school and activities. We also offer a free 15-minute consultation by phone or video, and our intake team can suggest a counsellor who fits your needs, your language and your budget.
