What addictions / substance use can feel like

Many people turn to alcohol, drugs or habits like gambling to cope. It may be time to reach out when it is hard to cut back, or it starts to cost you health, money, work or relationships.

  • Trying to cut back but finding it hard to stop
  • Strong cravings or urges that are hard to ignore
  • Using to cope with stress, pain or hard feelings
  • Feeling sick, shaky or on edge when you stop
  • Hiding how much you use from people close to you
  • Missing work, school or plans because of using
  • Spending more money on it than you can afford

How counselling helps

What working on it together looks likeHow counselling helps

  1. Early on

    Understand the why

You and your counsellor look at what using gives you, such as comfort, relief or escape, and what sits underneath it, without judgment.

  2. As you go

    Handle cravings and triggers

You practise ways to notice urges and ride them out. You also plan for the people, places and feelings that tend to set off using.

  3. Over time

    Build the life you want

You set your own goals, whether that is cutting back or stopping, and make a plan for setbacks. Recovery is often not a straight line.

About

More about addictions / substance use

Addiction can affect physical health, relationships, work, and overall quality of life. It also impacts the brain’s reward system, making recovery challenging without professional support such as addiction counselling in Canada.

At No Fear Counselling, we provide trusted addiction therapy and substance use counselling services in Canada. We understand how difficult the first step toward recovery can be, and we offer a safe and supportive environment to begin healing.

Causes and Factors of Addiction

Many factors can contribute to addiction and substance use disorders, including:

  • Family history of addiction
  • Trauma and past life experiences
  • Mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression
  • Social isolation or peer pressure
  • Early exposure to substance use or addictive behaviour
  • Environmental and socio-economic factors

Over time, repeated use changes brain functioning, increasing dependence and making it harder to stop. Many individuals also struggle with stigma, which prevents them from seeking addiction counselling or therapy support.

How can addiction counselling help?

Addiction counsellors understand the ambivalence that people may face about whether or not to quit a behaviour or substance, and often exploring this ambivalence is the first stage of treatment. The purpose of working with addiction is not to directly change the behaviour but to examine its purpose- the ‘why’ behind it, what comfort does the addiction offer, and what can be some of the topics that arise during sessions.

There is typically no one cause for addiction, but often layers underneath that interact with each other, including environment, trauma, life experiences, attachment, medical history, mental health history, among many other factors that influence its occurrence and perpetuity. Investigating these layers in a truly non-judgmental and compassionate environment can make the process less overwhelming, and it tends to loosen up the hold of the addiction. Clients make changes at their own pace with the understanding that the process of recovery is often not linear.

Approaches to counselling, such as Motivational Interviewing, CBT, and Mindfulness-based relapse prevention, aim to meet clients where they are at and support them with whatever their recovery goals may be.

We understand how challenging the first step can be to witness and challenge the habitual stream of thoughts, feelings and behaviours. You do not have to go on this journey alone. Through collaboration, you can open yourself up to the possibility that life can be experienced differently.

FAQs

Common questions about addictions / substance use counsellingCommon questions

Can't find your answer? Ask us a question.

  • You do not need to hit a low point to talk to someone. If using feels harder to control, or it is affecting your health, money, work or relationships, counselling gives you a space to sort out what is going on. You can share as much or as little as you like.

  • No. You do not need to stop using, or even be sure you want to, before you start. Many people feel torn, and our counsellors often begin by exploring that mixed feeling with you. You choose your own goals, whether that is cutting back, stopping or simply understanding your use better.

  • Motivational interviewing (MI) is a talk-based approach that helps you explore your own reasons for change, without pressure or lectures. Your counsellor listens and asks questions so you can weigh what using gives you and what it costs. Some counsellors also use cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), which looks at the links between thoughts, feelings and actions, or mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), which builds skills to notice urges without acting on them.

  • Yes. You can meet with a counsellor online from anywhere in BC, or in person in Burnaby, Surrey or Vancouver. We offer a free 15-minute consultation by phone or video, and our intake team suggests counsellors who fit what you need, your language, your budget and where you want to meet.

  • If you are in crisis or thinking about suicide, call or text 9-8-8, call 1-800-SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433), or call 911 if you are in danger. Counselling is not an emergency service, so please do not wait for a session. If you have questions about withdrawal or medication, talk with a doctor or nurse practitioner.
