How counselling helps

What working on it together looks likeHow counselling helps

  1. Early on

    Understand your story

Your counsellor listens at your pace, including your family history and culture, and helps you see how the past may show up in your life today.

  2. As you go

    Find ways to cope

Together you find ways to calm your body and mind on hard days. You can bring in what already grounds you, such as family, land, ceremony or faith.

  3. Over time

    Move forward your way

You set goals that fit your values, such as healing family ties, reconnecting with culture or feeling safer asking for help.

FAQs

Common questions about aboriginal concerns / first nations counsellingCommon questions

Can't find your answer? Ask us a question.

  • You do not need a big reason to reach out. If grief, family history, racism or old memories are getting in the way of your sleep, relationships or daily life, a counsellor can help you sort through it. You decide what to share and when. If you are in crisis or thinking about suicide, call or text 9-8-8, call 1-800-SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433), or call 911 if you are in danger.

  • Our counsellors aim to follow your lead on culture, beliefs and what healing means to you. You can bring in family, teachings from Elders, ceremony or faith if that matters to you, or keep the focus somewhere else. Our intake team suggests counsellors who fit what you need, your language, your budget and where you want to meet.

  • Yes, counselling can give you a safe place to talk about how residential schools, the Sixties Scoop or foster care have touched you and your family. Intergenerational trauma means pain passed down when families were hurt, and it can show up as worry, anger, grief or distance. Your counsellor goes at your pace and will not push you to share details before you are ready.

  • Yes, you can meet with a counsellor online from anywhere in BC. This can help if you live on reserve, in a rural area or far from a city. We also offer in-person sessions in Abbotsford, Surrey and Vancouver, and a free 15-minute consultation by phone or video can help you decide what feels right.

  • There may be ways to lower or cover the cost, so it is worth asking. Many extended health plans cover Registered Clinical Counsellors and Canadian Certified Counsellors (RCC/CCC), so check your own plan. We also offer sliding scale rates for eligible people, and you can find more about funding on our fees and funding page.
