How counselling helps

What working on it together looks likeHow counselling helps

  1. Early on

    Understand what matters

With your counsellor, you look at what feels missing and what has mattered to you over the years. This helps you name your values in your own words.

  2. As you go

    Ease the stuck feeling

You practise ways to quiet self-doubt and harsh comparison, such as noticing unhelpful thoughts and using mindfulness to stay with the present moment.

  3. Over time

    Move forward

You choose small, real steps that fit your values, like trying a class or changing your routine. Your counsellor helps you notice what feels meaningful as you go.

About

More about purpose

The Power of Purpose

Finding your purpose can bring clarity and direction to your life, providing you with a sense of meaning and fulfillment. Whether you're looking to improve your career, relationships, or personal growth, identifying your purpose can help you to stay focused and motivated, even in challenging times.

Overcoming Obstacles to Purpose

Many people struggle to find their purpose due to internal and external factors such as self-doubt, fear, or social pressures. Working with therapies like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) or anxiety-focused counselling can help you overcome negative thought patterns and build confidence.

Exploring Your Values

To identify your purpose, it's important to explore your values and what matters most to you. This process can involve reflecting on your past experiences, strengths, and interests, and identifying areas where you feel most fulfilled and engaged. A therapist can provide guidance and support as you explore your values and identify your purpose. Approaches such as Existential Therapy can help you deeply understand meaning, direction, and what truly matters in your life, while also supporting you in making sense of personal experiences and life choices.

Developing a Sense of Direction

Once you've identified your purpose, you can start building a clear direction in life. Solution-Focused Therapy and CBT techniques can help you turn goals into practical, achievable steps while overcoming obstacles along the way.

Living Your Purpose

Living your purpose means aligning your actions with your values, staying emotionally grounded, and maintaining motivation. Approaches like Mindfulness and Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) can help you stay connected to meaning and emotional balance.

FAQs

Common questions about purpose counsellingCommon questions

Can't find your answer? Ask us a question.

  • There is no test you need to pass to start. Many people reach out when feeling lost or flat has gone on for a while, or when it starts to affect their mood, sleep, work or relationships. You can also come simply because you want more clarity about your direction. You decide what to talk about and how fast to go.

  • Not always, but the two can overlap. Feeling unsure about your purpose is common and can happen even when the rest of life is going well. If you also notice low mood most days, losing interest in most things or changes in sleep and appetite, tell your counsellor so you can look at the whole picture together. A doctor or nurse practitioner can also help.

  • Our counsellors use several talk-based approaches and choose them with you. Existential therapy explores big questions about meaning, choice and what makes a life feel worthwhile. Solution-focused therapy builds on what is already working, and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps you notice and change thoughts that keep you stuck. Some counsellors also use mindfulness or emotion-focused therapy, which helps you understand and work with your feelings.

  • The first session is mostly a conversation about what brought you in and what you hope will change. Your counsellor may ask about your work, your relationships and the times you have felt most like yourself. You can share as much or as little as you like, and together you decide what to focus on next.

  • Yes, you can meet online from anywhere in BC, or in person at one of our offices. We offer a free 15-minute consultation by phone or video, and our intake team can suggest counsellors who fit what you need, your language, your budget and where you want to meet.
