What cancer support can feel like

A cancer diagnosis, yours or a loved one's, shakes most people. It may be time to reach out when fear, sadness or stress keeps getting in the way of sleep, relationships or daily life.

  • Fear about scans, test results or the cancer coming back
  • Trouble sleeping, or lying awake with worry
  • Feeling numb, shocked or not like yourself
  • Sadness or tears that come without warning
  • Feeling alone, even with people around you
  • Worry about family, work or money during treatment
  • Grief for the life or plans you had before
  • Feeling worn out from caring for someone with cancer

How counselling helps

What working on it together looks likeHow counselling helps

  1. Early on

    Make sense of it

You and your counsellor talk through what the diagnosis means to you. You can share as much or as little as you like, at your own pace.

  2. As you go

    Ease the stress

Together you practise ways to cope with fear before scans, treatment days and hard talks with family. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps with racing thoughts.

  3. Over time

    Find your way forward

Your counsellor helps you notice what matters to you now, whether you are in treatment, finished or caring for someone. You plan next steps that fit your life.

FAQs

Common questions about cancer support counsellingCommon questions

Can't find your answer? Ask us a question.

  • If fear, sadness or stress about cancer is making it hard to sleep, work or enjoy time with people, counselling may help. You do not need to be in crisis to reach out. Many people come during treatment, after it ends, or while caring for someone they love.

  • Yes, counselling is for anyone affected by cancer, not only the person diagnosed. Partners, children, parents and close friends often carry their own fear, grief and tiredness. You can come on your own, or talk with our intake team about including someone close to you.

  • Yes, you can meet with a counsellor online from anywhere in BC. Online sessions can help on days when treatment leaves you tired or travel is hard. You can also meet in person if you prefer. Our intake team suggests counsellors who fit what you need and where you want to meet.

  • Yes, grief, anger and fear are common after a cancer diagnosis, for the person diagnosed and for loved ones. Our counsellors work in a trauma-informed way, which means you set the pace and choose what to share. If you are in crisis or thinking about suicide, call or text 9-8-8, call 1-800-SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433), or call 911 if you are in danger.

  • In the first session, you and your counsellor get to know each other and talk about what brought you in. You choose what to share, and you can take a break at any time. Before you book, you can also have a free 15-minute consultation by phone or video.
