How it works

What a course of AEDP looks likeHow it works

  1. Early on

    Feel safe and seen

Your counsellor offers a warm, open connection. Together you slow down and notice what you feel right now, such as a tight chest, a lump in your throat or tears.

  2. As you go

    Stay with the feeling

With your counsellor beside you, you stay with a feeling like grief, anger or fear, a little at a time, so you no longer have to face it alone.

  3. Over time

    Notice what shifts

After a feeling moves, you pause to notice what is different, such as relief, pride or calm. You and your counsellor decide together how long to keep going.

AEDP may suit you if you

  • Want to feel your emotions, not just talk about them
  • Have felt alone with painful feelings for a long time
  • Value a warm, close connection with your counsellor
  • Want to work through guilt, shame or old hurts
  • Like noticing what you feel in your body as you talk
  • Want to notice your strengths, not only your problems

Something else may fit better if you

  • Are in crisis right now: call or text 9-8-8
  • Prefer structured, skills-based tools such as CBT
  • Mainly want practical advice on one specific problem
  • Do not feel ready to focus on feelings in the moment

More about AEDP

‍Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP)

Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP) is an evidence-based psychotherapy method that will enable patients to resolve their mental problems, such as trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, relationship issues, etc., through emotional resiliency and emotional connection. This type of therapy was designed by Diana Fosha. This kind of therapy is based on the theory of attachment, neuroscience, mindfulness, and experiential psychology to assist emotional processing.

At No Fear Counselling, we provide our clients with an environment to explore their emotions, to deal with their challenges, and to learn new ways to cope with situations. As opposed to other methods of therapy, AEDP not only focuses on symptom reduction but also on resilience building and self-awareness.

What Is Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy?

The theory of AEDP revolves around the concept that healing occurs through the framework of a positive interpersonal and emotional connection. Often, some individuals cannot cope with certain emotions because of their previous experiences or traumatic situations. Through AEDP, it will enable individuals to cope with those negative emotions and convert them into growth.

AEDP is not only about problems and difficulties but emphasizes people's capabilities, emotional resources, and healing potential. It helps clients to better understand their experience and learn how to cope with difficulties in more constructive ways through the therapist-client interaction.

How AEDP Therapy Works

AEDP creates a supportive therapeutic environment where clients can safely explore emotions and experiences that may have been difficult to process in the past.

During therapy, clients may work on:

FAQs

Common questions about AEDPCommon questions

Can't find your answer? Ask us a question.

  • An accelerated experiential dynamic psychotherapy (AEDP) session is a warm conversation that slows down to notice feelings as they happen. Your counsellor may ask what you notice in your body as you talk about something hard, such as a heavy chest or a lump in your throat. Together you stay with that feeling a little at a time, and you also pause to notice moments of relief, pride or calm.

  • No, you do not have to go into anything you are not ready for. Your counsellor goes at your pace and helps you feel steady and safe before any deeper work on painful memories, and you can share as much or as little as you like. If you are in crisis or thinking about suicide, call or text 9-8-8, call 1-800-SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433), or call 911 if you are in danger.

  • AEDP focuses on feeling and working through emotions in the moment, while cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) focuses more on noticing thoughts and practising new skills. In CBT you might write down a worried thought and look for other ways to see it. In AEDP you might stay with the feeling under the worry, with your counsellor beside you. Some people find one style suits them better, and some use both.

  • Yes, many people do AEDP by video, because much of the work is talking, noticing feelings and staying connected with your counsellor. You can meet in person or online from anywhere in BC. If you meet online, choose a quiet, private space where you can feel comfortable if strong emotions come up.

  • It may be, depending on your plan and your counsellor's credentials. Many extended health plans cover Registered Clinical Counsellors and Canadian Certified Counsellors (RCC/CCC), so check your own plan to see what it includes. Our fees and funding page explains your options, and we offer sliding scale rates for eligible people.
