How it works
Early on
In humanistic counselling, you talk about what matters to you now. Your counsellor listens closely, without judging, and helps you notice what you feel and need.
As you go
Together you look at your choices, your values and how you see yourself. Between sessions, you may try new ways of speaking up or caring for yourself.
Over time
You and your counsellor decide together how long to keep going. Over time, many people find they trust their own feelings and choices more.

Humanistic approaches are a family of talk-based counselling styles that see you as the expert on your own life. They focus on your feelings, choices and growth in the present, rather than on labels. Person-centred therapy and existential therapy are two examples. Your counsellor offers warmth, honesty and close listening so you can find your own answers.
Most of a humanistic session is a conversation that you lead. You might talk about a hard week, a big decision or a feeling you cannot quite name, and your counsellor reflects back what they hear so you can see it more clearly. You can share as much or as little as you like. There are no set exercises, though you may choose things to try between sessions.
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is more structured, while humanistic approaches follow your lead. In CBT you often work on specific thoughts and behaviours with set exercises. In humanistic counselling, you and your counsellor explore what you feel and what matters to you, without a fixed plan. Some counsellors blend the two, and neither one is the right fit for everyone.
Yes, humanistic counselling can be done by video, since it is mostly conversation. You can meet in person or online from anywhere in BC. Our intake team suggests counsellors who fit what you need, your language, your budget and where you want to meet. We also offer a free 15-minute consultation by phone or video to help you decide.
It may be, depending on your plan and your counsellor. Many extended health plans cover Registered Clinical Counsellors and Canadian Certified Counsellors (RCC/CCC), and our team includes RCCs. Please check your own plan for the details. You can learn more about rates, sliding scale options for eligible people and funding on our fees and funding page.
