About

About EMDR therapy in Surrey

290 words

People in Surrey often ask about EMDR when a past event keeps pulling them back. A car crash, a frightening moment at work or a hard childhood can stay with you long after it ends. You might startle at sudden noises, avoid certain places or see the same images at night. EMDR, short for eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, is one way a counsellor can help with memories like these.

For EMDR therapy in Surrey, you can meet a counsellor at the King George Hub at 9850 King George Blvd, at our Newton office or at our Fleetwood office on 84 Avenue. You can also meet by video from anywhere in BC. A free 15-minute consultation lets you ask questions before deciding anything.

What EMDR therapy in Surrey looks like

It starts with the free consultation by phone or video, where you can share as much or as little as you like. Our intake team uses that conversation to suggest a counsellor who suits you, with your language, budget and meeting place in mind. Early EMDR sessions in Surrey focus on getting to know each other and building ways to feel steady before any memory work, such as picturing a calm place or slowing your breath. You do not have to tell the whole story, and your counsellor works at your pace.

Later, your counsellor may ask you to hold a memory in mind while your eyes follow their hand, or while you notice taps or tones that move side to side. You then pause and notice what comes up. Many people find a memory may feel less sharp over time. You can meet at a Surrey office or by video, and you decide together how long to keep going.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR was developed in the 1980’s by Francine Shapiro after a chance discovery that when she was recalling past trauma, rapidly moving her eyes back and forth seemed to quickly diminish her distress.

Can't find your answer? Ask us a question.

  • Yes, you can meet an EMDR counsellor in person in Surrey. Our offices include the King George Hub on King George Boulevard, our Newton office near King George and 74 Avenue, and our Fleetwood office on 84 Avenue near 159th Street. Our intake team can suggest a counsellor at the office that is easiest for you to reach.

  • Yes, EMDR can often be done by video from home in Surrey or anywhere else in BC. Online, your counsellor may guide the side-to-side part by asking you to follow their hand or tap your own shoulders or knees. Some people feel steadier in the room, so you can talk with your counsellor about which way suits you.

  • No, you do not have to describe every detail of what happened. In EMDR, your counsellor may ask only for a short picture of the memory, a word for how it makes you feel now and where you notice it in your body. You choose what to share, and you can ask to pause or stop at any point.

  • It may be, depending on your plan and your counsellor. Many extended health plans cover Registered Clinical Counsellors and Canadian Certified Counsellors (RCC/CCC), so please check your own plan. Our fees and funding page explains more, and we offer sliding scale rates for eligible people.

  • Counselling, including EMDR, is not an emergency service, so please do not wait for a session if you need help now. If you are in crisis or thinking about suicide, call or text 9-8-8, call 1-800-SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433), or call 911 if you are in danger. When you are ready to begin, your counsellor works at your pace and helps you feel steady before any deeper work.
