About

About depression therapy in Vancouver

300 words

People in Vancouver often reach out to us about depression when the days start to blur together. You might come home too drained to cook, cancel plans you used to enjoy, or lie awake replaying what went wrong. Some people cry more easily, while others mostly feel numb. Sad stretches happen to everyone. It may be time to reach out when the low mood stays for weeks or makes it hard to care for yourself or your work.

You can see a depression counsellor in Vancouver at our offices downtown, in South Granville on West Broadway, at 12th and Cambie, on Commercial Drive and on Grant Street in East Vancouver. You can also meet by video from anywhere in BC. The free 15-minute consultation is a calm place to start.

What depression therapy in Vancouver looks like

First, you book a free consultation by phone or video and say how things have been. Our intake team then suggests counsellors who fit your needs, language, budget and where in the city you want to meet. In a first session of depression therapy in Vancouver, you might talk about when the low mood began, how you sleep and eat, and who you still feel close to. Nothing has to be shared before you are ready.

As sessions go on, your counsellor may help you spot thoughts that pull you down, such as 'nothing I do matters', and check them against what really happened. You might pick one small thing each week, like a short walk or replying to one friend, and see how it feels. Some people also explore the grief, burnout or loneliness under the low mood. You can meet at whichever Vancouver office is easiest to reach, or by video on mornings when getting dressed feels like a big task.

Depression

Depression is a constant feeling of sadness and disinterest that might make you think that you will never feel good again. It can make it incredibly difficult to find meaning and purpose to continue functioning on a daily basis.

FAQs

Common questions about depression therapy in VancouverCommon questions

Can't find your answer? Ask us a question.

  • Yes. You can meet a counsellor who helps with depression at our offices downtown, in South Granville, near 12th and Cambie, on Commercial Drive or on Grant Street in East Vancouver. When you book, tell our intake team which part of the city is easiest for you to reach. If travel feels like too much some weeks, you can meet by video from anywhere in BC instead.

  • No, you do not need a diagnosis or a referral to start. You can reach out simply because your mood has felt low, empty or flat for a while. If you have questions about a diagnosis or about medication, those are best taken to a doctor or nurse practitioner. You can share as much or as little with your counsellor as you like.

  • You do not have to know before you reach out. A rough patch often lifts as things change, while depression may linger for weeks and dull things that once mattered, like food, music or time with friends. A counsellor can help you sort through what you are feeling without putting a label on you. The free 15-minute consultation is a low-key way to ask your questions.

  • It may be, depending on your plan. Many extended health plans cover Registered Clinical Counsellors and Canadian Certified Counsellors (RCC/CCC), so it helps to check your own plan's details. We also offer sliding scale rates for eligible people. Our fees and funding page explains the options in more detail.

  • Please do not wait for a counselling session if you feel unsafe, because counselling is not an emergency service. If you are in crisis or thinking about suicide, call or text 9-8-8, call 1-800-SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433), or call 911 if you are in danger. Once you are safe, a counsellor can support you with what comes next.
