About

About relationship therapy in Vancouver

305 words

People in Vancouver reach out to us when a relationship that matters starts to feel heavy, whether with a partner, a parent, a sibling, a roommate or a close friend. You may notice the same argument about chores or money coming back, holding back what you think just to keep the peace, or feeling far from someone you used to feel close to. You can come on your own, without the other person.

For relationship therapy in Vancouver, you can meet a counsellor on Commercial Drive, on West Broadway near Birch in South Granville, or downtown at Park Place on Burrard Street. If getting across town is hard, you can meet by video from anywhere in BC. The free 15-minute consultation is where to start.

What relationship therapy in Vancouver looks like

The free consultation happens by phone or video and gives you space to explain which relationship is on your mind. Our intake team then suggests counsellors who fit what you need, your language, your budget and where you would like to meet. Your first session of relationship counselling in Vancouver is a chance to describe a recent hard moment, how each of you tends to react, and what a better week together might look like. You decide what to share and when.

In later sessions, you may look at where your ways of handling conflict first took shape, and notice the moment a calm talk starts to tip into blame or silence. You might practise naming a need in one clear sentence, setting a limit with a family member, or asking for a do-over after a sharp reply. If trust has been hurt, your counsellor can help you sort through it at a pace you choose. You can meet in person or by video, and some people later invite the other person in.

FAQs

Common questions about relationship therapy in VancouverCommon questions

Can't find your answer? Ask us a question.

  • Yes, you can start relationship counselling on your own. Many people come alone to understand their part in a pattern, decide what they want, and practise new ways to respond. If the other person wants to join later, you can talk with your counsellor about whether a shared session makes sense.

  • You can meet in person at our offices at 2495 Commercial Drive, at 1285 West Broadway in South Granville, or at Park Place, 666 Burrard Street, downtown. Our intake team can suggest a counsellor who works at the office easiest for you to reach. You can also meet by video from anywhere in BC.

  • No, it can be about any relationship that weighs on you. People talk with us about tension with a parent, distance from a grown child, a friendship that has gone cold, or a hard coworker. Some come to understand why the same kind of hurt keeps showing up with different people.

  • It may be. Many extended health plans cover Registered Clinical Counsellors and Canadian Certified Counsellors (RCC/CCC), so it is worth checking your own plan. We also offer sliding scale rates for eligible people. Our fees and funding page explains your options in more detail.

  • Your safety comes first, and you do not need to wait for a session. If you are in crisis or thinking about suicide, call or text 9-8-8, call 1-800-SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433), or call 911 if you are in danger. Counselling is not an emergency service. If there is harm at home, a joint session is not the place to start, and a counsellor can meet with you on your own.
