About

About anxiety therapy in Vancouver

278 words

Many people come to us for anxiety therapy in Vancouver when worry starts running their days. You might wake before your alarm with your mind already listing what could go wrong, feel your heart pound before a meeting, or skip coffee with a friend because a busy café feels like too much. Feeling worried now and then is part of life. It may be time to talk with someone when the worry keeps pulling you away from work, rest or the people close to you.

Our Vancouver offices are downtown on Burrard, Howe and Granville, along West Broadway, near 12th and Cambie, and on Commercial Drive. You can also meet by video from anywhere in BC. The free 15-minute consultation is a quiet place to begin.

What anxiety therapy in Vancouver looks like

It starts with a free consultation by phone or video, where you can say what is going on and ask your questions. Next, our intake team suggests counsellors who match your needs and language, your budget, and whether you would like an office visit or video. In a first session, your counsellor may ask what a hard day looks like, where you feel the anxiety in your body and what you want to get back to. You decide how much to share.

Over time, anxiety counselling in Vancouver may include slowing your breath when your chest tightens in a crowded room, writing down a worried thought and finding another way to see it, and taking small, planned steps toward what you have been avoiding. Some people like an office near work or home, while others pick video for anxious mornings when staying put feels easier.

Anxiety

While occasional worry is an expected part of life, Anxiety Counselling can help when anxiety results from your system being stuck on high alert and hypervigilance from the perception of threat.

FAQs

Common questions about anxiety therapy in VancouverCommon questions

Can't find your answer? Ask us a question.

  • Yes, you can meet an anxiety counsellor in person at our Vancouver offices. They are downtown on Burrard, Howe and Granville, on West Broadway in South Granville, near 12th and Cambie, and in East Vancouver on Commercial Drive and Grant Street. Our intake team can suggest a counsellor at the location that is easiest for you to reach, or one who meets by video from anywhere in BC.

  • No, you do not need a diagnosis or a referral to start. Many people come simply because worry, panic or tension has been getting in the way, and that is enough. Your counsellor focuses on what you notice and what you want to change, not on a label. If you have questions about a diagnosis or medication, a doctor or nurse practitioner is the right person to ask.

  • You might work on calming your body, understanding your worry and slowly facing what you have been avoiding. For panic, that could mean practising slower breathing until it starts to feel familiar. For constant worry, you may write down a looping thought and look at it from another side. Your counsellor goes at your pace, and you choose which steps to try.

  • It may be, depending on your plan. Many extended health plans cover Registered Clinical Counsellors and Canadian Certified Counsellors (RCC/CCC), and our team includes RCCs, so check the details of your own plan. We also offer sliding scale rates for eligible people, and our fees and funding page explains the options.

  • If you are in crisis, call or text 9-8-8, or call 911 if you are in danger. Counselling is not an emergency service, so please do not wait for a session when you feel unsafe. Once things feel steadier, a counsellor can help you make sense of what happened and what support you would like next.
