About

About PTSD therapy in Vancouver

273 words

People in Vancouver reach out to us about PTSD after events that stayed with them long after they ended: a crash, an assault, a fire or a violent moment at work. Your body may still react as if it is happening. You might sleep with a light on, tense up when a siren passes, or feel far away from people you love. No diagnosis is needed to start.

For PTSD therapy in Vancouver, you can meet a counsellor downtown on Burrard or Granville Street, or at our South Granville office on West Broadway. Video sessions from anywhere in BC are also possible. The free 15-minute consultation is a first step, with no need to explain what happened.

What PTSD therapy in Vancouver looks like

You start with the free consultation by phone or video, and you only share what you choose. Our intake team then suggests counsellors who fit your needs, language, budget and how you want to meet. Your first session of PTSD counselling in Vancouver focuses on safety and trust: how your days and nights are going, what sets off a reaction, and what already helps. You can pause at any time.

Your counsellor works at your pace and helps you feel steady before going deeper. That may begin with tools for a racing heart or a flashback, such as pressing your feet into the floor and noticing five things around you. Later, if you want, you may look at the memory in small pieces, ease the guilt or shame that can follow, and slowly take back routines PTSD has narrowed. You can meet downtown, in South Granville or by video.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

FAQs

Common questions about PTSD therapy in VancouverCommon questions

Can't find your answer? Ask us a question.

  • Yes, you can meet in person in Vancouver. Our counsellors who help with PTSD see people downtown at Park Place (666 Burrard St), the Electra Building (970 Burrard St), the Rogers Building (470 Granville St) and 825 Granville St near Robson, as well as in South Granville at 1285 W Broadway. If coming in feels like too much some weeks, you can also meet by video from anywhere in BC.

  • No, you do not need a diagnosis or a referral to start. You can come because of what you notice, such as nightmares, feeling on guard in crowds or avoiding the street where something happened. Our counsellors do not prescribe medication, so questions about medication are for a doctor or nurse practitioner.

  • No, you do not have to describe what happened before you are ready. Your counsellor works at your pace and first helps you feel steady, so you have ways to calm your body if a memory comes up. You choose what to share, and you can stop or take a break at any point in a session.

  • It may be, depending on your plan. Many extended health plans cover Registered Clinical Counsellors and Canadian Certified Counsellors (RCC/CCC), so check your own plan for what it includes. We also offer sliding scale rates for eligible people, and our fees and funding page explains the options.

  • If you are in crisis or thinking about suicide, call or text 9-8-8, call 1-800-SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433), or call 911 if you are in danger. Counselling is not an emergency service, so please do not wait for a session when you feel unsafe. Once you are safe, a counsellor in Vancouver or by video can help with what comes after.
