About

About couples therapy in Coquitlam

290 words

Couples in Coquitlam reach out to us at many stages: dating, living together, married, or not sure whether to stay together. Maybe the same fight about chores or money keeps coming back. Maybe a talk at the end of a long day ends in silence, or you feel more like roommates than partners. Some couples come after a move, a new baby or a breach of trust. You do not need a crisis to start.

You can meet a couples counsellor in Coquitlam at our office at 3041 Anson Avenue, in Coquitlam Centre. You can also meet by video from anywhere in BC. A free 15-minute consultation lets you ask your questions before either of you decides anything.

What couples therapy in Coquitlam looks like

One or both of you can book the free consultation by phone or video. Our intake team listens to what you hope will change and suggests counsellors who fit, including your language, your budget and where you want to meet. In the first session of couples therapy in Coquitlam, your counsellor asks each of you how you see the relationship and what brought you in. Each partner gets room to speak, and you choose together how much to share.

Your counsellor stays on the side of the relationship, not of one partner. In later sessions, you may slow down a familiar argument to notice what each of you feels in the moment. You might practise listening without planning your reply, and try new ways to ask for what you need. Now and then, a session with one partner may mix with your joint sessions. You can keep meeting at the Anson Avenue office, by video, or a mix of both, whatever suits your two schedules.

Couples Counselling

Couples counselling differs from individual counselling in that the relationship is considered to be the client. Patterns of communication are explored in a non-pathologizing way, discovering underlying emotions that fuel negative interactions.

FAQs

Common questions about couples therapy in CoquitlamCommon questions

Can't find your answer? Ask us a question.

  • Yes, you can meet a couples counsellor in person at our office at 3041 Anson Avenue, in Coquitlam Centre. If one of you works late or you live in different places for a while, you can also meet by video from anywhere in BC. Some couples mix both, and you can talk about what works for you during the free consultation.

  • Not always. Couples counselling usually happens with both partners in the room, since the relationship is the focus. Sometimes a counsellor may suggest a session with one partner, then return to joint sessions. Your counsellor stays on the side of the relationship, not of one person, and talks with you both about how sessions will be set up.

  • You can still reach out on your own. Many people start with the free 15-minute consultation to ask questions and learn what couples counselling involves, then share that with their partner. If your partner is not ready, you might begin with individual counselling to think through what you want. You decide what to share and when.

  • It may be. Many extended health plans cover Registered Clinical Counsellors and Canadian Certified Counsellors (RCC/CCC), so check your own plan, and your partner's if you each have one. We also offer sliding scale rates for eligible people. You can find more on our fees and funding page, or ask about it during the free consultation.

  • Your safety comes first, and a joint session is not the place to start if you feel afraid at home. You can talk with a counsellor on your own first, and the free consultation is a place to ask how. Counselling is not an emergency service. If you are in crisis or thinking about suicide, call or text 9-8-8, call 1-800-SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433), or call 911 if you are in danger.
