About

About couples therapy in Vancouver

286 words

Partners in Vancouver come to us at all kinds of moments. Some have been together a few months, some for decades, and some are deciding whether to stay. Small comments may turn into big fights. One of you may go quiet while the other keeps pushing, or most talks may now be about bills and schedules. Things do not have to be at a breaking point to reach out.

For couples counselling in Vancouver, you can meet downtown on Granville or Burrard Street, on West Broadway in South Granville, near 12th and Cambie, or on Commercial Drive. You can also meet by video from anywhere in BC. The free 15-minute consultation is a gentle place for either of you to start.

What couples therapy in Vancouver looks like

Either one of you, or both together, can book the free consultation by phone or video. Tell our intake team what you each hope for, and they suggest counsellors who fit your relationship, your language, your budget and where you want to meet. A first session of couples therapy in Vancouver is mostly listening: what has changed and what each of you wants. You set the pace, and your counsellor stays on the side of the relationship rather than either person.

Later sessions may map the pattern that repeats when you argue and the feelings under it, such as hurt or worry about being left out. You might practise pausing before you reply, saying back what your partner said, and making a repair after a rough day. Sometimes a session with just one of you may help too. You can keep coming to a Vancouver office, switch to video when one of you is away, or mix both.

Couples Counselling

Couples counselling differs from individual counselling in that the relationship is considered to be the client. Patterns of communication are explored in a non-pathologizing way, discovering underlying emotions that fuel negative interactions.

FAQs

Common questions about couples therapy in VancouverCommon questions

Can't find your answer? Ask us a question.

  • Yes, you can meet a couples counsellor in person at our Vancouver offices, including downtown, on West Broadway, near 12th and Cambie and on Commercial Drive. If one of you works late or travels, you can also meet by video from anywhere in BC. Some couples mix office visits and video sessions as their weeks change.

  • You can still begin on your own. Either of you can book the free 15-minute consultation and talk through what is happening, and our intake team can suggest a counsellor for individual sessions in the meantime. Many people find it useful to understand their own side of a pattern, and your partner can choose to join later if and when they want to.

  • No, your counsellor stays on the side of the relationship, not of one person. Each of you gets time to speak and to be heard, even when you see things very differently. Sessions look at the pattern between you rather than deciding who is right, so neither partner has to defend themselves alone.

  • It may be, depending on your plan. Many extended health plans cover Registered Clinical Counsellors and Canadian Certified Counsellors (RCC/CCC), so it is worth checking your own plan. We also offer sliding scale rates for eligible people, and our fees and funding page explains your options in more detail.

  • Your safety comes first, and a joint session is not the place to start if there is violence or fear at home. You can book the free consultation on your own and talk about what kind of support fits you. Counselling is not an emergency service: if you are in crisis or thinking about suicide, call or text 9-8-8, call 1-800-SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433), or call 911 if you are in danger.
