About

About couples therapy in Surrey

272 words

Couples in Surrey reach out to us for many reasons. A new baby, a blended family or caring for aging parents can leave little time for each other. Some partners keep having the same fight about work hours, money or screen time, while others feel more like roommates than a couple. You do not need a crisis, or a clear plan for the future, to begin.

You can book couples counselling in Surrey at our office in the Sandel Industrial Park on 76 Avenue, our Morgan Heights office on 165th, or another of our Surrey offices. If one of you works late or travels often, you can also meet by video from anywhere in BC. The free 15-minute consultation lets you both ask questions first.

What couples therapy in Surrey looks like

One or both partners can join the free consultation by phone or video. Our intake team then suggests counsellors who fit your relationship, your language, your budget and where you want to meet. In a first session of couples therapy in Surrey, your counsellor learns about your story as a couple and what feels stuck right now. Each of you gets room to speak, and your counsellor sides with the relationship, not either partner.

Later on, you may look at the hurt under the arguments, like feeling ignored or afraid of losing each other. Many couples practise calling a pause before a fight boils over, repairing after a hard moment and raising a worry without blame. At times, a session with one partner alone may help. You can meet in person in Surrey, by video or a mix of both.

Couples Counselling

Couples counselling differs from individual counselling in that the relationship is considered to be the client. Patterns of communication are explored in a non-pathologizing way, discovering underlying emotions that fuel negative interactions.

FAQs

Common questions about couples therapy in SurreyCommon questions

Can't find your answer? Ask us a question.

  • Yes, you can meet a couples counsellor in person at several of our Surrey offices, including our Panorama office on Highway 10, the King George Hub and our Surrey Central office on Whalley Boulevard. When you reach out, our intake team can suggest a counsellor at a location that works for both of you. Some couples also mix in-person sessions with video.

  • You can still start on your own. Many people book the free 15-minute consultation by themselves to ask questions and learn what sessions are like. Seeing a counsellor alone can help you think about the relationship and what you want. If your partner decides to join later, you can talk with your counsellor about how to bring them in.

  • Yes, you can meet by video from anywhere in BC. Some couples choose video when childcare, shift work or a long day makes getting to an office hard. You can also move between video and a Surrey office if your needs change, and you decide together with your counsellor what works best.

  • It may be, depending on your plan. Many extended health plans cover Registered Clinical Counsellors and Canadian Certified Counsellors (RCC/CCC), so it is best to check your own plan before you book. We also offer sliding scale rates for eligible people. You can read more on our fees and funding page.

  • If you are in crisis or thinking about suicide, call or text 9-8-8, call 1-800-SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433), or call 911 if you are in danger. Counselling is not an emergency service, so please do not wait for a session. If there is violence at home, your safety comes first, and a joint session is not the place to start. You can talk with a counsellor on your own about what feels safe.
