About

About couples therapy in Burnaby

294 words

Couples in Burnaby come to us at every stage: dating, living together, married for years, or unsure whether to stay. The same argument about chores or money may keep coming back, or a hard talk may end in silence and a closed door. You do not need to be in crisis to start.

Couples counselling in Burnaby takes place at Burnaby Square near 6th Street and 10th Avenue, at 2025 Willingdon Avenue in the Solo District, and at the Boss Business Centre on Production Way. When your schedules rarely line up, video sessions from anywhere in BC are another option. The free 15-minute consultation lets you ask questions before either of you decides anything.

What couples therapy in Burnaby looks like

Either partner can book the free consultation, by phone or video, and share as much or as little as feels right. Our intake team then suggests counsellors who suit your relationship, your language, your budget and whether you would rather meet in Burnaby or online. In a first session of couples therapy in Burnaby, your counsellor asks each of you what brought you in and what you hope will be different. You go at a pace that feels safe for both of you, and your counsellor stays on the side of the relationship, not one person.

Later sessions often look at the cycle behind your arguments, such as one partner pushing to talk while the other pulls away. You may practise slowing down a heated moment, listening until your partner feels heard, and asking for what you need without blame. Now and then, a session with one of you alone may help. Sessions can be in person in Burnaby or by video, so a busy week does not have to stop the work.

Couples Counselling

Couples counselling differs from individual counselling in that the relationship is considered to be the client. Patterns of communication are explored in a non-pathologizing way, discovering underlying emotions that fuel negative interactions.

FAQs

Common questions about couples therapy in BurnabyCommon questions

Can't find your answer? Ask us a question.

  • Yes. You and your partner can meet a couples counsellor at Burnaby Square on 6th Street, at 2025 Willingdon Avenue in the Solo District, or at the Boss Business Centre on Production Way in East Burnaby. If getting to an office together is hard, you can also meet by video from anywhere in BC. Our intake team can suggest a counsellor who works where you want to meet.

  • Not always. Most sessions are with both of you, because the relationship is the focus of the work. At times your counsellor may suggest meeting with one partner alone, and joint sessions can mix with an individual one. Your counsellor stays on the side of the relationship, and you can talk together about how sessions will be set up at the start.

  • You can still reach out on your own. One partner can book the free 15-minute consultation by phone or video and ask how couples counselling works, with no pressure to book. Some people start with individual counselling while their partner thinks it over. You decide what to share and when, and your partner can join later if they choose.

  • It may be, depending on your plan. Many extended health plans cover Registered Clinical Counsellors and Canadian Certified Counsellors (RCC/CCC), so it is worth checking your own plan before you book. We also offer sliding scale rates for eligible people. Our fees and funding page explains your options, and you can ask about costs during the free consultation.

  • Your safety comes first, and a joint session is not the place to start if you feel afraid of your partner. Counselling is not an emergency service. If you are in crisis or thinking about suicide, call or text 9-8-8, call 1-800-SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433), or call 911 if you are in danger. When you feel safe to talk, the free consultation can help you think about next steps.
